The VY One Tonner is the first One Tonner model since the WB ended in 1985. As it is based on the VY, it contains most of the features of the VY Commodore and Ute.
The VY One Tonner has been designed with strength in mind. The Holden One Tonner's unique part-monocoque and part chassis frame construction incorporates a world-first `torque arm` system. While most conventional utes employ a 'torque box' system with the chassis frame welded to the cab, the Holden chassis frame has additional reinforcement beams and webbing that allow a robust separate frame structure to be bolted into place. The heavy duty torque arm system has two vertical uprights at the front of the chassis frame which bolt to the back of the cab. Each is bolted top and bottom and stabilised to make an extremely rigid connection. Bolting through a complete cross section rather than welding the surfaces together allows the use of heavier gauge material and creates a much stiffer, stronger and more durable bond.
The One Tonner is the longest Holden on the market, and is wider and higher than the Holden Ute. The robust rear multi-spring suspension and live rear axle, reinforced prop shaft and rear axle housing, heavy duty wheels and specially developed tyres make for great strength and durability. Brakes are designed for optimum performance under repeated braking with heavy loads.
The One Tonner can be optioned with a number of stylish and practical trays. They include an economical, general-purpose alloy tray and a high-feature dropside tray with removable sides which comes complete with a patented side ladder step and a header board contoured to the cabin lines. At the top of the range is a hard wood tray with colour-coded steel combing and load board.
There are three colours to choose from: Heron White, Redhot and Phantom (black metallic).
Major changes introduced with the Series II include: The S V8 is now powered by the 235kW High Output V8. There is now the added safety benefit of steering column modifications which assist in reducing the risk of occupant injury in a frontal crash.
